Clinical Trial Description
UVA Health System, Cancer Center seeks children aged 1-10 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), in the subgroup called standard risk-average, (SR-ALL), for a research study.
Researchers are conducting this study because the usual treatment for this disease, chemotherapy, does not cure all children with SR-ALL. In this study, participants will be placed randomly in one of four groups. One group will receive standard chemotherapy. The other groups will receive more intensive therapy to see if more children would be cured with other therapies without side effects that are too difficult. In the course of the study, participants will receive medications by vein, by mouth, by injection, and by spinal tap; physical exams, blood tests, and questionnaires. Study treatment will last for 2 1/3 years for girls, and for 3 1/3 years for boys.
