Clinical Trial Description

UVA Health System, Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology-Oncology seeks adults 65 years and older with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma for a research study.

The purpose of the study is to compare the effects, good and/or bad, of the experimental drug lenalidomide added to Melphalan and prednisone with those of Thalidomide, Melphalan and prednisone to find out which treatment is better. Study involves examinations, taking study medication, blood draws and urine tests, x rays, bone marrow samples, and questionnaires. Clinic visits lasting 1-2 hours are once a month for 12 months with follow up visits for 10 years.

Thalidomide and lenalinomide are provided free of charge.

Participant's insurance company will be billed for routine care and procedures.
