UVA Health System, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the division of Gynecologic Oncology, seeks women ages 18 and above at high risk for ovarian cancer planning to undergo removal of both ovaries.

The purpose of the study is to find out whether certain hormones called progestins may play a role in the prevention of ovarian cancer. In this particular study we are looking at a progestin by the name of Levonorgestrel, which is regularly used in birth control pills. Currently, Levonorgestrel is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent ovarian cancer and is considered experimental. It has not proven to be safe or helpful. We know from other studies that birth control pills, which are a combination of the female hormones, estrogen and progestin, protect many women from developing ovarian cancer. However, it is unclear how these hormones prevent ovarian cancer. We want to see if taking a course of Levonorgestrel affects the tissue in your ovaries and fallopian tubes. We will study that tissue once it is surgically removed. Some of the reasons for an increased risk of ovarian cancer are having the presence of BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 genetic mutations, and coming from a family with a history of breast, ovarian, and/or colon cancer.
