Clinical Trial Description
Temozolomide is a chemotherapy given by mouth that has activity against both high and low-grade gliomas. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the addition of temozolomide to radiation therapy improves the survival of patients requiring treatment of low grade gliomas.
Participants will have a routine history and physical exam performed, tumor evaluations by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and routine blood tests.
You may qualify for the study if you:
- Are a male or non-pregnant female age 18 or older
- Have diagnosis of low-grade glioma. The diagnosis must be based
on a surgical specimen of the tumor from the most recent
surgery/biopsy.
- Have uncontrolled symptoms such as: headaches or poorly
controlled seizures despite trying two or more anti-seizure medications
- Have neurological symptoms
- Have cognitive problems
- Have tumor growth by serial MRIs
- Are able to undergo MRI with and without contrast. If tumor removal was performed, MRI after surgery is required.
- Are willing to practice effective method of birth control during study participation
- Don't have uncontrolled infection.
- Had no previous radiation, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, radiosurgery, or investigational treatment for your brain tumor at any time.
You may not qualify for this study if you have/had/are:
- Other active cancers requiring therapy to control disease
- Are younger than 40 years of age and don't have either
tumor-related symptoms, poorly controlled seizures, or MRI evidence of
tumor growth
- Pregnant or nursing female
