Clinical Trial Description

UVA Health System, Department of Radiation Oncology seeks men and non-pregnant women, age 18 or older, who have pain caused by cancer that has metastasized to the spine for a research study.

Multiple radiation treatments are frequently used to treat pain caused by cancer that has spread to the spine. Image-guided radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a treatment that uses highly focused x-rays to deliver a single high dose on a specific area of the body. Special equipment is used to position the patient and guide the focused beams toward the area to be treated and away from normal tissue.

The purpose of this study is to treat the cancer that has spread to your spine and is causing pain with image-guided radiosurgery/SBRT. Image-guided radiosurgery/SBRT delivers a higher, more localized dose of radiation to the targeted area than External Beam Radiation Therapy which has been the more commonly used form of treatment in the past.

There are other eligibility requirements to participate in this study. Your doctor can determine whether you meet these requirements.
