Clinical Trial Description

UVa Health System, Cancer Center, Division of Hematology/Oncology seeks adult men and women over the age of 18 with resectable or borderline resectable pancreas cancer for a research study.

The purposes of the study are to 1.) demonstrate the safety of combined accelerated-fraction radiotherapy and chemotherapy, 2.) increase the number of patients who can have successful pancreas surgery, and 3.) improve survival of patients with pancreas cancer. Study patients will take an oral chemotherapy drug, capecitabine, and have accelerated-fraction radiotherapy (AF-RT). This treatment, called neoadjuvant therapy since it occurs before surgery, will occur every weekday for 4 weeks. The AF-RT gives an individual a higher dose of radiation to a very specific location within the pancreas over a shorter time period (4 weeks) than standard radiation therapies (5.5 weeks). In addition to the chemotherapy and AF-RT, study patients will have physical exams, blood draws, and 2 imaging scans as treatment procedures.

There will be 7 study visits, 20 radiation treatments, and 10 phone calls which occur over 5-years of post-treatment follow-up. Participants insurance company will be billed for all therapy, tests, procedures, and physician charges. No compensation is provided for this study.
