Background

Biography:

Dr. Irving Kron received his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. He finished his medical school training at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1975. He continued his training in General Surgery Residency at the Maine Medical Center. He completed his training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 1982 at the University of Virginia.

Board certified in Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Dr. Kron joined the faculty at the University of Virginia over 26 years ago.  His specialties are in Adult Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, and Peripheral Vascular Surgery. He was elected Chief in Vascular Surgery and Associate Medical Director in Thoracic Cardiovascular Postoperative Unit in 1989. He became Chief, Division of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, 1993-2007. He was appointed Vice-Chairman, Department of Surgery in 1999.  Appointed Chairman, Department of Surgery beginning in 2002 and currently holds the position of S. Hurt Watts, Professor in Surgery. 

Dr. Kron has received several honors and awards and recently received America’s Top Doctor Award and was named one of America’s Top Surgeons.  He holds office on numerous committees, local, state and national including, but not limited to: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons; American College of Surgeons; American Heart Association, Executive Committee, Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery, Chair; Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research & Education, Director; Virginia Cardiac Surgical Initiative; Tissue Bank-Medical Advisory Committee; American Association for Thoracic Surgery, President; American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Chair Publications Committee; American College of Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology Committee; Cardiac Surgery Biology Club; Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA); Muller-Jones Surgical Society, Council.

Dr. Kron has made nearly 250 presentations on Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery in the U.S and international countries. He has published 400 manuscripts, and nearly 30 books and chapters. He has been the principle investigator for over 20 funded grants.
