Biography:

Dr. Steers received his medical degree in 1980 from the Medical College of Ohio after receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. After a residency at the University of Texas and M.D. Anderson Hospital, Dr Steers completed a fellowship in Neurobiology and Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a faculty member at the University of Virginia since 1988 and became Chair of the Department of Urology in 1995 and awarded the Hovey Dabney Professorship in 2003. Dr Steers is Editor of the Journal of Urology. He is currently President of the American Board of Urology a Director on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His honors include annual listing in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America.  Men’s Health Magazine has named Dr Steers one of the top 15 Best Doctors for Men in the United States. He has received the American Urologic Association’s Gold Cystoscope Award for contributions to Urology and the Dornier Innovative Research Award as well as numerous other awards from clinical and scientific societies.  He has lectured and performed surgery throughout the world and has been elected to numerous scientific/professional societies, including the Physiological Society of London, Clinical Society, and American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. Dr Steers also served as President of the Society for Basic Urologic Research. With over 300 basic research and clinical publications, Dr. Steers’ diverse clinical interests span urinary incontinence, BPH, neurogenic bladder and robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Known as an expert in the complications of prostate cancer treatments (incontinence and impotence) Dr Steers has extensive experience in performing robotic prostatectomy over the past 7 years and hundreds of cases following a sabbatical at Henry Ford Hospital where the procedure was pioneered.

Dr Steers is a member of the FDA’s Reproductive Medicine Advisory Panel and chaired the NIH’s Urinary Incontinence as well as Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trials groups. He has been Principal Investigator on numerous NIH grants including NIDDKs’ O’Brien Research Center. His team has been pivotal in numerous clinical trials for incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Dr Steers was a principal investigator on the original clinical trials on the use of Viagra for erectile dysfunction. Dr Steers was President of the University of Virginia physician’s practice plan (Health Services Foundation) until 2009 and has chaired or served on numerous University and national committees. In 2004 Dr Steers initiated the Men’s 4 Miler for Prostate Cancer. Recent efforts have focused on establishing a Men’s Health and Performance Institute. He and his wife tend Three Notched Vineyard in Albemarle County and produce Well Hung Wines in the Monticello Appellation of Virginia.
