Background

Biography:

Dr. Bilchick has been serving on the clinical faculty at the University of Virginia since 2007.  He was born in New York City and spent his early years in New Jersey.  He received his undergraduate degree (B.A.) from Dartmouth College with a major in physics.  He then attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1999.  He subsequently completed three different residencies/fellowships at Johns Hopkins: internal medicine, cardiology, and clinical cardiac electrophysiology (also known as EP, the cardiology subspecialty field dealing with heart rhythm disorders).  He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 2007 as Assistant Professor of Medicine.  He continues to be board-certified in three different specialties: clinical cardiac electrophysiology, cardiovascular disease (cardiology), and internal medicine.

At UVA, Dr. Bilchick treats patients with cardiac rhythm problems and performs a full range of procedures for patients with a variety of heart rhythm abnormalities.  These include catheter ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), and ventricular tachycardia (VT).  These are rapid or irregular heart rhythms causing symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, light-headedness, and passing out.  During ablation procedures, areas in the heart causing rhythm abnormalities are targeted to restore the normal heart rhythm.  Dr. Bilchick also has a special interest in pacemakers, defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).  During his time at UVA, he has developed a tailored pre-op and post-op protocol for patients receiving CRT to improve heart failure symptoms.

At UVA, Dr. Bilchick also has maintained an active research program involving application of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) to patients with arrhythmias and heart failure, evaluation of advanced treatment options for atrial fibrillation, and outcomes evaluation in Medicare patients with heart rhythm disorders and heart failure.  He is finding that CMR (the gold standard for evaluation of cardiac function and scar) is very useful to help guide therapy for heart rhythm patients because many of these patients have scar in the heart or abnormal heart function.  He receives ongoing funding from the National Institutes of Health aimed at using CMR to improve outcomes for patients with heart failure who qualify for CRT.  In addition, he is also involved in integrating CMR technology with ablation of atrial fibrillation at UVA, developing new atrial fibrillation ablation protocols, and evaluating new drugs for atrial fibrillation.  Regarding Medicare outcomes, a recent publication attracted widespread interest and is influencing practice in this area.  Dr. Bilchick also holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Virginia in patient-oriented clinical research and is the author of over 30 peer-reviewed publications.  He continues to pursue this patient-oriented research to help offer the latest technology and procedures to patients with heart rhythm disorders and heart failure

Dr. Bilchick has experience living abroad in Spain, Latin America, and the Middle East.  In addition to English, he speaks Spanish fluently.  In his spare time, he enjoys being with his family and children, as well as engaging in outdoor activities and playing the piano.
