In 1854 John Snow described the complex relation between Cholera and water pollution, approximately 7 years before germ theory was first described. Snow’s observation is often regarded as the founding event in the science of epidemiology, and is an important influence on my research which involves (1) understanding the complex systems in critical care that influence patient outcomes, (2) improving fundamental epidemiology of pulmonary diseases, and (3) describing hospital outbreaks as to improve our fundamental understanding of their epidemiology.
Background
I moved to Virginia from Oklahoma where I attended the University of Oklahoma. I finished my undergraduate, graduate, and medical degree at the OU, with field placement at the World Health Organization as part of my masters in epidemiology. After completing my residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia, my wife and I spent 6 months backpacking around the world. Outside of the hospital I take music lessons, a long time passion of mine, and I am an active rower and runner.
