Background

Biography:

Dr. Smith was born and raised in Fauquier County VA. He attended the University of Virginia for college, medical school, and general surgery residency. During his general surgery residency, he also completed a two-year postgraduate research fellowship at the University of Virginia. He went to Columbia University in New York to further specialize in endocrine surgery. Following his endocrine surgery fellowship, he returned to join the faculty at the University of Virginia as Assistant Professor of Surgery. 

Dr. Smith specializes in endocrine surgery treating diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as the endocrine pancreas. He uses minimally invasive techniques whenever appropriate for the patient. He performs some thyroid and parathyroid procedures using local anesthetic and performs some thyroid and parathyroid procedures on an outpatient basis. He is also a member of the melanoma multidisciplinary treatment team and manages melanoma and other skin cancers.
