Thyroid Nodule/Mass, Thyroid Goiter, Thyroid Cancer, Thyroglossal Duct Cyst, Grave’s Disease, Parathyroid Adenoma, Parathyroid Hyperplasia, Hypercalcemia due to Hyperparathyroidism, Parathyroid Cancer, Functional and Non-Functional Adrenal Nodule/Mass, Adrenal Cancer, Hyperaldosteronism, Conn’s Syndrome, Cushing’s Disease, Pheochromocytoma, Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndromes (MEN), Functional Pancreatic Mass, Insulinoma, Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors, General Abdominal Surgery (including gallbladder disease and surgery of hernia)
Surgical treatment of disease of the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, and adrenal glands using minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic and robot-assisted. Thyroid and parathyroid surgery using either general or local anesthesia.

Background
Dr. Smith was born and raised in Fauquier County VA. He attended the University of Virginia for college, medical school, and general surgery residency. During his general surgery residency, he also completed a two-year postgraduate research fellowship at the University of Virginia. He went to Columbia University in New York to further specialize in endocrine surgery. Following his endocrine surgery fellowship, he returned to join the faculty at the University of Virginia as Assistant Professor of Surgery.
Dr. Smith specializes in endocrine surgery treating diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as the endocrine pancreas. He uses minimally invasive techniques whenever appropriate for the patient. He performs some thyroid and parathyroid procedures using local anesthetic and performs some thyroid and parathyroid procedures on an outpatient basis. For appropriate patients he is able to perform thyroid surgery without making a scar on the neck.
