If you’re a patient, family member, caregiver or staff member, we’re here for you. We provide interfaith services, which means we value and respect religious diversity and provide spiritual care and understanding to people of all faiths.

Maybe you’re having trouble adjusting to an illness or have questions about the meaning of life. We listen to you with an open mind and an understanding ear. You don’t need to be religious or to belong to any congregation to call on us.

What Chaplains Can Do For You

  • We’re here to help you and your family:

    • Find a religious caregiver 
    • Talk over concerns about ethics or health care decisions
    • Request religious rites, services and prayers or sacred literature
    • Cope with pain, suffering and emotional distress
    • Deal with grief and death

    Our chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    To arrange a visit, call us at 434.924.2642 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

    After 5:00 p.m., ask staff to dial ‘0’ and ask for the on-call chaplain.

Visit the Hospital Chapel

Come to Pray & Reflect

The chapel is open 24 hours a day for meditation, prayer and quiet reflection.

Location: On the first floor of University Hospital, near the East Elevators

Available resources: Bibles, Qurans, Jewish prayers and booklets of sacred prayers and readings; daily devotionals and prayer cards in Spanish and English; rosaries.

Chapel Use for Groups

The Department of Chaplaincy Services and Pastoral Education must approve use of the chapel for services and prayer groups. Contact us at 434.924.2642 or chaplaincy@virginia.edu.

Come to a Worship Service

  • Open to all, including patients, families and staff. Patients may dress informally (bathrobes, etc.). Check with the charge nurse before leaving your unit.

    Weekly services at the chapel:

    • Prayer Service
      Fridays and Sundays
      12:00 - 12:15 p.m.
    • Interfaith Worship Service
      Tuesdays
      12:00 - 12:30 p.m.
