Visitor Guidelines

Please follow these guidelines when visiting a patient at UVA Medical Center.

When You Visit a Patient

Please do not come to the hospital unless you are feeling well. Wash your hands before and after visiting a patient. Read and follow any signs posted outside the patient room.

Visitors who go above the first floor of the hospital must wear a pass, available from the Hospital Information Desk. Up to two visitors are allowed to see a patient at a time.

After 9 p.m., visitors should acquire a pass and information about visiting at night from the the security desk in the Emergency Department. This helps us know who is in the hospital after hours.

Staff at the Information Desk must provide permission for children to see a patient. Read our policies and guidelines for children (PDF)

No smoking is allowed. Find out more about alternatives and stop-smoking resources.

Quiet times occur during the afternoons and at night. Please keep your voice low to allow for patient rest.

Cell Phones
Cell phones can only be used near the main elevators and in the public areas on the first floor of the hospital.

Family Lounges

Lounges are available near our patient units for visitors’ comfort. A telephone and computer is available in each lounge. Learn more about our hospital amenities.

Care Partners: Get Involved

Care partners (PDF) are people you designate to be active members of your healthcare team. They're given a special security code and help keep family and friends informed about your condition. You are asked about care partners during the admission process but can name or change a care partner at any time during your hospital stay. You can have up to two care partners, if you wish.
