IMRIS Therapy Suite for Brain Tumor Surgery
IMRIS is a powerful new imaging technology for brain tumor surgery.
The powerful imaging of our new IMRIS™ therapy suite gives our neurosurgeons these advantages:
- Instantly evaluate the results of brain tumor removals
- Better position deep-brain stimulators for movement disorders
- Shave vital minutes off treatment times for stroke patients
The only one of its kind in Central Virginia, the IMRIS suite combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with biplane angiography (captures X-rays of arteries and blood flow) for extremely targeted, image-guided treatment.
This advanced system allows neurosurgeons to evaluate the success of brain tumor removal while in the operating room. In the past, neurosurgeons needed to complete surgery and then do an MRI.
"We can remove as much of the brain tumor as we can see, but then we can get an MRI before we stop surgery and get a real-time update of exactly what we did during the surgery," says Mark E. Shaffrey, MD, co-director of the Neuro-Oncology Center and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. "If there's a small amount of tumor left, surgeons can go back and remove it right away."
