Developmental Disabilities and Delays

It’s only natural for parents to start watching for their child’s developmental milestones soon after birth. If you suspect that your child’s progress is behind that of other children his or her age, you may have questions like: “Is my child normal?” or “Why isn’t my child crawling?” or “Why isn’t my child talking?” or “How can I help my child with learning problems in school?”

Our developmental pediatricians work closely with doctors and health care professionals in other specialties to provide diagnosis and treatment recommendations for developmental problems in infants, children and teenagers. We educate parents about the community resources available to help their children, including school intervention programs and social services agencies.

We evaluate children with a variety of conditions, including:

Though your child’s primary care doctor will continue to provide basic care services after we make a diagnosis and treatment recommendations, we provide periodic consultations to monitor your child’s progress and determine if other services are needed.

Prenatal Consultations

Many developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome or spina bifida, may be detected before a child is born. Our doctors offer prenatal counseling to educate parents about the special needs of children with developmental disabilities.

Preschool Development Clinic

Early intervention is important when parents suspect their child has a developmental or behavioral problem. Through our Preschool Development Clinic, we provide evaluations and next-step recommendations for preschool-aged children with a variety of developmental and behavioral concerns. If additional testing is needed, we refer children to the appropriate health care professionals at KCRC or to the local school system.

Autism Support

We offer a number of support groups and activities for families of children with autism spectrum disorder. These include:

  • Family workshops on autism spectrum disorder for recently diagnosed children.
  • Big Night Out: Parents of our autism patients can enjoy a date night on the first Friday of each month. UVA medical students provide child care for the autistic patients.
  • Social skills workshops for families of children with autism.
