At UVA, our team of colon cancer experts provide the latest treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

We can remove tumors with laparoscopic surgical techniques, which means smaller incisions, reduced pain and a faster recovery. Recent treatment advances are making surgical cure possible for more and more patients — even those with advanced-stage cancers.

We also offer:

  • The only anal clinic in the region, which means we can diagnose and treat at a level most places can't
  • A genetic counseling clinic to help us determine your risk for cancer and other inherited diseases

Screening for Colon Cancer Prevention

Colon cancer is preventable.

Making sure you get the right kind of screening test for colon cancer is critical. We offer four types of screening at UVA:

  • Colonoscopy: We use a flexible tube with a camera to examine the entire colon. Any potentially pre-cancerous polyps found can be removed during the procedure.
  • Fecal occult blood test: We examine your stool for any hidden blood, which can be a sign of a growth or cancer.
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy: We use a flexible tube with a camera to examine the lower third of the colon, the area where more than half of all colorectal cancers occur.
  • Double-contrast barium enema: During this procedure, X-rays of the colon and rectum are taken after a liquid containing barium is put into the rectum. This helps show any abnormalities.
Care for Your Child

If your child has to see a digestive health specialist, it’s important that they visit a doctor who understands the needs of kids.
