Why Choose Us?
Heart disease is one of the top health risks for millions and the number one killer of women in the United States.
UVA's Heart Center combines innovation, research and expert clinical skills to focus on one purpose — restoring and protecting your heart's health.
Each year, we care for more than 5,000 patients in our hospital and 35,000 patients in our clinics.
Whether you're interested in heart disease prevention or you're looking for treatment options, the depth of our expertise and resources is something you won't find at other nearby medical centers.
At the Forefront of Heart Care
UVA's latest advances in heart care include:
- A new less invasive treatment for ventricular tachycardia, a condition in which the heart's lower chambers beat erratically
- Virginia's first center for adult congenital heart disease
- A new robotic catheter system, the Sensei®, that makes it easier for electrophysiologists to maneuver a catheter into difficult-to-reach places in the heart
- Virginia's first hospital using a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) known as the TandemHeart® in patients who would otherwise be too weak or too sick to tolerate lifesaving procedures
- The region’s first heart care clinic for women, UVA Club Red Clinic, which focuses on prevention and shared medical appointments.
Pioneering Technology
At UVA, we’re constantly working to develop and improve less invasive procedures for heart care. That means many procedures that once involved open heart surgery can be done with smaller incisions and shorter hospital stays.
Surgery Expertise
Each year, our surgeons provide care to over a thousand patients who have heart or aortic diseases. We perform more chest surgery operations than any other program in the state and more than most programs in the nation. Our busy congenital heart program has excellent results compared with national norms. And we specialize in complex reoperative (or "redo") heart surgery.
But behind all of the technology and expertise, there are people. While we operate one of the largest and most active programs in the entire Southeast, we constantly strive to provide each patient with an individualized care plan based on the most current medical practices and research available.
