What's new and news at the UVA Neuro-Oncology Center.
- Our clinics have moved to the new Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center building. This beautiful new facility offers convenient access to a full range of state-of-the-art cancer treatments – all in a warm, inviting and invigorating space designed for the needs of patients and their families.
- Drs. James Larner, David Schiff, and Mark Shaffrey were recently named to the 2011 U.S. News and World Report Top Doctors list, reflecting recognition by their peers that they are in the top 1% in the nation in their respective fields
- Four new clinical trials have recently opened at UVA:
- We're taking the lead in testing the novel compound trans-sodium crocetinate in conjunction with radiation and temozolomide in newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
- "ICT-107-201" tests a vaccine against glioblastoma in conjunction with radiation and standard chemotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
- “DFCI 08-342” combines the standard treatment for recurrent high-grade gliomas bevacizumab (Avastin®) with the promising new pill panobinostat, a histone deacetylase inhibitor.
- “NCCTG N0872” studies whether the addition of dasatinib (Sprycel®, a drug routinely used for leukemia) to Avastin improves the outcome in recurrent glioblastoma.
- The UVA Neuro-Oncology Center is offering fellowship training in neuro-oncology. Find out more.
- UVA's Gamma Knife program is the first center in the United States to incorporate the "EXTEND™" program" into Gamma Knife planning. EXTEND™ allows for frameless stereotactic radiosurgery with Gamma Knife, including the ability to perform multisession radiosurgery.
- James Mandell, MD, PhD, and Kodi Ravichandran, PhD, have received a grant from the Goldhirsh Foundation to study the role of Brain Angiogenesis Inhibitor 1 in glioblastoma. They discovered that BAI1, in addition to inhibiting angiogenesis, also mediates the recognition and clearance of dying cells in the brain. Read more.
- The lab of BJ Purow, MD, recently identified a metabolic enzyme strongly overexpressed in glioblastomas that may represent an effective therapeutic target. Their research was published in Neuro-Oncology.
- David Schiff, MD, was recently named to the editorial board of the journal Neurology and as a member of the NCI Brain Malignancy Steering Committee, a group that determines which clinical trials will receive federal support.
