Conditions & Treatments
We don't just have the best neurosurgeons in Virginia; we have some of the best in the world treating your condition at a top neurology hospital.
Brain Tumors
We offer a range of innovative options, including some of the most advanced brain tumor treatments available. We work with the UVA Cancer Center, one of only two National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Clinical Cancer Centers in Virginia, and we offer the most advanced treatments available, including Gamma Knife and services through our Skull Base Center.
Pituitary Tumors
Our team sees more pituitary tumor patients than any other clinic in the world. Our unique offering: A two-day clinic for convenient, effective treatment.
Epilepsy
Our comprehensive care includes both a team approach and the ability to apply every available diagnostic and treatment option. At UVA, we offer a Level 4 epilepsy surgery center, the highest designation assigned by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
Spine Services
We treat everything from simple to complex spine disorders, including back pain, neck pain, cervical and lumbar degenerative disc disease, cervical disc herniation, spinal tumors, degenerative disc disease, cervical and lumbar stenosis, vertebral compression fractures, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis and deformities. For the majority of patients, we try non-surgical treatments first. Sometimes, treatments are combined to increase effectiveness. Our surgical options include less invasive procedures that may result in shorter hospital stays and shorter recovery time.
UVA's Stroke Center
UVA is the only center in the region capable of certain treatments that can potentially reverse stroke if applied within hours of onset. Our Stroke Center has trained stroke neurologists on call 24 hours a day.
Movement Disorders and Tremors
Our team offers innovative treatments for Parkinson's disease tremors and dystonia, including deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound. Other movement disorders treated include Huntington's disease, tremor, chorea, myoclonus, ataxia and tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome.
Alzheimer’s and Other Memory Disorders
A diagnosis of a memory disorder can be overwhelming. Our Memory Disorders Program helps people cope with the challenges of impaired memory. Conditions treated include dementia and lewy body disease, memory impairment, Alzheimer's and multi-infarct dementia. The Alzheimer's Association provides on-site assistance in our memory disorder clinic.
Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injuries
Medical treatment for brain and spinal cord injuries changes rapidly as doctors learn more about the science of repair and recovery. Our doctors perform research that often leads to new treatments in these areas. We have an intensive care unit dedicated to the care of patients with brain injuries, as well as a unit specially designed to care for patients with spinal cord injuries.
