Choosing a Primary Care Provider

Several types of doctors are certified by national medical boards to provide essential care known as primary care.

At UVA Health System and its affiliated practices, several types of doctors are certified by national medical boards to provide essential care known as primary care. All primary care providers (PCPs) conduct regular checkups to help you stay healthy, take care of you when you're sick or injured, manage a chronic condition and assist with your decision to have a certain test or to see a specialist.

Family medicine doctors are unique because they treat patients of all ages, which means you can choose a doctor who knows and treats your whole family. Some of our family medicine doctors even have special training in sports medicine and allergies.

Whatever your age, we have a doctor for you:

Adults: Internal medicine doctors specialize in caring for adults. Many have special expertise with conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Children: Pediatricians give special attention to children, from newborns to teenagers.

Women: For issues related to the female reproductive system, from pregnancy to menopause, you can choose an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) or midlife gynecologist.

65 Plus: Geriatricians focus on issues related to aging and help those over 65 stay active and independent.
