Behavioral Medicine Center

We offer several clinics that specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a variety of medical problems that are either caused or affected by a patient’s lifestyle or stress. These include:

  • Migraine or tension headaches
  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Diabetes management
  • Insomnia
  • Phobias, such as fear of flying or fear of leaving home

Using treatment methods such as exercise and biofeedback, we train patients to be aware of and to control body responses. Through computerized monitoring, patients can observe these controllable body responses, such as muscle tension and breathing patterns.

With treatment and practice, nearly 80 percent of our patients learn to control or eliminate these symptoms.

Evaluations Before Treatment

Our Behavioral Medicine Assessment Clinic provides evaluations for other medical clinics at UVA to help determine patients’ psychological readiness and social support systems.

This can help us determine a patient’s ability to follow through with post-operative instructions or treatments.

Patients who are preparing for certain surgeries, such as weight reduction, organ transplant or insulin-pump are often required by doctors or their insurance providers to undergo these evaluations.
