Health and Prevention
Information on health & prevention for Psychiatry patients.
Though mental illnesses were once poorly understood both in the medical community and in society, today there is hope for patients suffering from these conditions. Thanks to advances in research and treatments—including progress made by our own faculty here at UVA—people with mental illnesses can lead normal, productive lives.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, one-fifth of American adults suffer from a diagnosable mental illness each year. The same percentage of school children also suffer from these conditions. We believe a patient’s mental health is important to overall wellness, and our psychiatrists and other providers educate patients about the mental disorders affecting their lives and offer the highest level of care to manage these conditions.
