Conditions and Treatments

Listing of Conditions and Treatments for Pulmonary and Respiratory Care

Lung Transplants

We offer the largest lung transplant program in Virginia. With one-year survival rates at nearly 90 percent, and three-year survival rates over 80 percent, our success rates meet or exceed national benchmarks.

Sleep Disorders

Our team approach to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders includes consultations with sleep physicians, behavioral medicine specialists, dentists and surgeons, many of whom are known throughout the world for their work in sleep medicine. We provide in-depth education to help patients with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders succeed with treatments. We also are one of the few centers around to offer an extensive pediatric sleep program that includes evaluations for infants.

Cystic Fibrosis

Our Cystic Fibrosis Clinic is one of 110 in the nation to be accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, meaning we meet the highest standards for treatment of adult patients with cystic fibrosis.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

We are one of the few medical centers in the region to offer a specialized clinic for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis

We were one of the first to treat advanced emphysema with endobronchial valves. These tiny implants — an alternative to lung volume reduction surgery — block inhaled air from flowing into the diseased sections of the lungs, and improve overall function of the lungs.

Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic

When it comes to achieving the best prognosis for patients suffering from interstitial lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis and organizing pneumonia, a precise diagnosis is critical.

We have experts in pulmonology, thoracic radiology, pulmonary pathology and thoracic surgery who will work with you and your doctor to diagnose and treat these complex diseases.

We provide consultation, treatment and monitoring of therapy, and access to clinical trials of new medications for pulmonary fibrosis. And we work closely with the lung transplant team to identify patients who may benefit from a transplant.

Pulmonary Hypertension

We work with doctors in other specialty areas to help diagnosis and treat pulmonary hypertension. Because this condition is often associated with underlying rheumatologic, pulmonary or cardiac diseases, we provide extensive diagnostic tests to help us identify underlying causes of the disease.

Other Conditions We Treat Include:

We also offer care for respiratory conditions resulting from neuromuscular diseases, such as:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
  • Muscular dystrophy
