Conditions and Treatments

Lisitng of conditions and treatments for Urology patients. GreenLight™ Laser Treatment, Lithotripsy, Brachytherapy, Cryotherapy, conditions we treat, etc.

GreenLight™ Laser Treatment

We offer GreenLight Laser Treatment for benign prostatic syperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. During this procedure, a laser fiber is used to vaporize tissue blocking the bladder’s opening. Patients often experience immediate relief from their symptoms, few side effects and a short recovery time.

Lithotripsy

We were one of the first hospitals in the nation to use lithotripsy treatment for kidney stones. This non-surgical procedure uses shock waves to break stones into fragments small enough to be passed through normal urination. For larger stones or to treat more complex stone disease, we also offer laser or ultrasound treatments to destroy stones.

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy treatment for prostate cancer is a highly targeted radiation therapy performed by implanting tiny radioactive “seeds” in the area being treated. This procedure minimizes the effect of radiation on surrounding tissue. Within weeks or months, the radioactivity level of the seeds diminishes, causing no permanent effects.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is available for treatment of prostate and kidney cancer. This non-surgical technique is performed by inserting freezing argon gas into the tumor through a thin needle. The resulting ice then destroys all cancerous tissue in the affected area. The procedure causes little, if any, harm to surrounding tissue.

da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

We were one of the first medical centers in Virginia to offer the da Vinci robotic prostatectomy for treatment of prostate cancer.

This procedure involves the use of a miniature camera and robotic “hands” that are inserted into the body through a series of tiny incisions.

These tools ensure steadiness and precision, allowing the surgeon to see and avoid damage to nearby nerves and muscles that control continence and potency.

Typical outcomes include reduced blood loss and post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and less likelihood of side effects like impotence, incontinence and infection.
