The UVA Health System Department of Neurology seeks adults ages 21 and older with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease who experience Freezing of Gait to participate in a research study.
The purpose of the research study is to evaluate a new device, “ParkinSense”, in its ability to assist with overcoming freezing of gait episodes in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. This device will provide sounds, vibrations, and visual cues to help reduce the occurrence and length of freezing of gait(FOG) episodes.
The study involves a 2-week trial of the device and 3 visits to UVA. Total participation is over 2 weeks. The first visit will be about 2-3 hours and each visit after will be about 1 hour. The study visits will consist of a review of your medical history, a brief neurological exam and cognitive assessment, a Parkinson’s Disease Assessment (UPDRS) and physical activity testing including the device. The 2-week at home trial of the device will consist of 1 week of device use and 1 week of non-device use. During the 2 weeks of using the device, you will complete questionnaires, a daily diary, and wear a daily fitness-activity tracker.
Study-related exams and interventions are provided at no cost.
