Effect of Empagliflozin on Skeletal Muscle and Cardiac Microvasculature and Insulin Sensitivity in Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes
Study Description

UVA Health System, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology is conducting a clinical research study. We want to learn more about how the study drug Empagliflozin affects blood vessels in skeletal and cardiac muscle of adults with Type 2 Diabetes. You may be eligible if you have Type 2 Diabetes but otherwise healthy, are 18-70 years of age, not taking insulin, and a non-smoker.

Participation involves:
Total of 6 outpatient visits:
- 4 outpatient visits (lasting about 1 to 2 hours).
- 2 Outpatient visits (lasting about 8 hours each, and spaced 12 weeks apart).
- All visits are during the week.
Study procedures include taking the study medication, blood draws and optional MRI.
The study will take approx. 4 months to complete.

Study-related exams and blood labs are provided free of charge.
