Official Trial Title
The Effect of the Ketogenic Diet on Patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis
Study Description

The University of Virginia, Department of Neurology is conducting a research study to see the effects of the ketogenic diet (low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet) in those diagnosed with MS.

This study is for patients with relapsing-remitting MS who have stable disease (i.e. no clinical relapse within the past 6 months) and are between the ages of 12 and 45 years of age.

This study will involve 5 visits over a 12 month period. You/your child will work with a personal dietitian to assess current nutrition and she will provide you with education and assistance on maintaining a particular diet at home. You will be asked to adhere to this diet for 6 months’ duration. To assess the potential benefits of this diet, we will be following regular body mass measurements, blood tests, inflammatory markers, surveys, and monitoring your fatigue and activity levels while on this diet. You will also be sent home with a pedometer to wear for 7 days after each visit. These will be mailed back to the study team.

Study-related labs, testing, and supplies are provided free of charge.
