Amy Alson, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine, psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences and is board-certified in internal medicine and psychiatry. Her clinical practice focuses on treating individuals with eating disorders, along with the general medical and psychiatric care of young adults.
Dr. Alson completed her undergraduate studies at Duke University, after which she spent several years working and living in New York City. Upon deciding to pursue a career in medicine, she earned her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. She came to the University of Virginia in 2002 for combined residencies in internal medicine and psychiatry, and undertook additional training to develop experience and expertise in treating eating disorders.
As an educator, she teaches medical residents integrated care practices to improve access to mental healthcare for primary care patients. In addition, she teaches interviewing skills to residents in psychiatry.
In the community beyond UVA, Dr. Alson has volunteered at the Charlottesville Free Clinic for many years.
