Outcomes in congenital heart surgery, pediatric cardiac critical care
Emily Downs, MD, is a fellowship-trained congenital cardiac surgeon. She specializes in caring for infants, children, and adults who need surgery to repair a heart defect that is present at birth.
“Within a few minutes of meeting a patient,” she says, “I start to picture their life, their family, and how their heart disease impacts them, now and into the future. I want my patients to have the opportunity to live the fullest life possible and work with them to achieve that.”
Dr. Downs was raised in south Florida and attended a performing arts high school as an oboist. She attended the University of Michigan and studied oboe performance and biomedical engineering. She then came to UVA for medical school. She completed an integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency at UVA, followed by a congenital cardiac surgery fellowship at Children's Hospital of Colorado.
“I have wanted to be a doctor (surgeon) since at least middle school,” Dr. Downs shares. “I was inspired by what I saw as a career with huge potential to improve the lives of people around me. I have always loved cardiac physiology and the complexity and variety of heart anatomy found in congenital cardiac surgery.”
