About

Biography

Kelli Hughes, PA, is a physician assistant who focuses on working with cancer patients and helping them address reactions to infusions and other urgent care symptoms.

In her interactions with patients, Kelli uses an approach called WAIT, which means 'Why Am I Talking?'

“Listening to my patients is the anchor of how I care for them,” Kelli says. “They inspire me to learn more every day, and it is my calling to care for them.”

After working for 14 years as a clinical nutritionist specializing in high-risk obstetrics, diabetes, and weight loss surgery, Kelli decided she wanted to shift her professional focus to taking care of the whole person.

“I couldn't do that as a registered dietitian,” says Kelli, who also was a certified diabetes educator for a diabetes education and management program. “The complex medical conditions of my patients inspired me to go back to school so that I could take care of them completely!”

Growing up in a Navy family, Kelli became a world traveler at a young age. As a child, she also aspired to pursue a career in medicine, she was discouraged from doing so because “I wasn't a math and science person,” she says. Defying the well-meaning career advice, Kelli earned her physician assistant degree from Mary Baldwin Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences in 2021.

“After college and getting a communication degree, I decided I could be a math and science person,” Kelli says. “And here we are!”
