Mandee May, FNP, is a nurse practitioner who specializes in providing care for patients recovering from a heart (cardiology) procedure.
“My approach to patient care,” Mandee shares, “is that it's my job to use my education to impart knowledge that allows my patients to make the most informed decision about their healthcare. I also strongly believe in patient education. If a patient knows why something is important for their overall health, they are more likely to comply with the care plan.”
She adds, “I am able to take off my ‘nurse practitioner’ hat and understand that people have lives aside from doctor's appointments and medications. I like to work with my patients to achieve maximum health that also allows them to continue to enjoy life.”
Before joining the UVA hospital cardiac transition unit team, Mandee worked as a bedside nurse in emergency medicine and in the intensive care unit for patients who had thoracic or cardiovascular surgery. After finishing graduate school, her first job as a nurse practitioner (NP) was in family medicine.
Mandee received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Walden University, and her Master of Science in Nursing from UVA.
“I wanted to become a nurse after I was in a car accident and spent three weeks in the hospital at UPMC where I received excellent nursing care. Once I was in nursing school, I learned about the role of a nurse practitioner and knew that I wanted to be able to practice at the maximum skill level, so that's why I chose to continue on and get my graduate degree.”
Mandee grew up in a small rural town near Pittsburgh. She moved to Virginia in 2011 when she started nursing school and immediately fell in love with the Charlottesville area so decided to make it her home. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and three dogs on her farm, caring for turkeys and beef cattle.
