Esophageal Cancer Care at UVA Health
For expert, compassionate esophageal cancer care, you can count on UVA Health. As a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center, we're leaders in cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. We're the only such center in Virginia — and one of just 52 in the country.
Our team is prepared for the moment you need us most. Each year, we perform more than 150 surgeries on the esophagus. Our high-volume experience results in better patient outcomes. Plus, we use the safest surgical approaches we can. We were among the first to perform chest surgery with tiny cameras, an approach known as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).
We're also skilled in nonsurgical alternatives. These include:
- Laser therapy, which uses a beam of intense light to kill cancer cells
- Electrocoagulation, which uses an electric current to kill cancer cells
Being diagnosed with esophageal cancer can be overwhelming. But rest assured that UVA Health is here for you in this moment. Our doctors and scientists are leaders in cancer care who define new treatments and push the boundaries of research. They'll work hand in hand to develop a personalized treatment plan that gives you the best possible outcome.
