Neuropsychology Testing FAQs

Make an Appointment

Why do I need neuropsychological testing?

Neuropsychological testing helps your provider understand how different areas of your brain are working. It's usually recommended when patients experience change in concentration, reduced organization or decreased memory.

Sometimes, providers use testing to document your abilities before a problem occurs. This establishes your current state and is used to see if, when and how changes happen.

What do the tests involve?

The tests assess your ability to think and remember. You can expect to fill out questionnaires, construct puzzles or perform tasks, like math problems and drawing.

What do the tests mean?

The results help your provider understand your strengths and weaknesses and plan the appropriate treatment.

What should I expect?

In order to make your testing as comfortable as possible, remember:

  • Your appointment will last about 3-4 hours. You should bring a light snack. You'll be able to take breaks as needed.
  • Bring a family member with you. They may be able to provide your provider with additional information.
  • If you wear glasses and/or hearing aids, bring them.

When will I get the results?

The provider who interprets your results will schedule a time for you to discuss them. This usually takes about 2-3 weeks.

We'll also give your primary care provider a written report of the results.

Will my insurance company pay for this testing?

Our office will get authorization from your insurance company before your appointment. If we can't get your visit approved, we'll tell you before your appointment. Medicare typically covers this testing.
