Why does my UVA Health System statement look different?

We have launched a new billing system that includes a new patient statement that is easier to understand.

What health care services are included on my new UVA Health System statement?

Charges for care you received at most UVA Health System locations on or after July 1, 2017, are now combined on one bill. These include UVA Medical Center, UVA physician clinics and lab services.

What health care services are not included on my new UVA Health System statement?

Bills for visits prior to July 1, 2017 will continue to be billed separately using the old statement format. Please continue to pay these bills. You also may receive separate bills from UVA Imaging, Community Medicine, Health South or Continuum Home Health.

How do I know what my current balance is?

Our new statement design includes an easy-to-spot Account Summary box on page 1. Inside this box, your Amount Due is listed in bold type. This indicates your current UVA Health System balance due for care provided after July 1, 2017.

Why am I still receiving other billing statements in the old format?

We appreciate your patience as we transition to our new billing system. You will continue to receive statements for visits before July 1. These will include statements from UVA Health System and University Physicians Group. Please continue to pay these bills as you normally would.

How do I pay my bill?


For your convenience, we have three options available.


Can I view my bill online?

Yes! You can view your UVA Health System bill and manage your health online through MyChart.

Do you offer paperless billing?

Starting July 1, 2017, you’ll have the option to manage all your UVA Health System accounts online through MyChart — pay your bill, view past statements, check outstanding balances, set up payment plans, and sign up for paperless billing.

What is MyChart?

MyChart is a secure patient portal website that allows you to access your health information and communicate with your doctors online. Using a secure username and password, you can login to MyChart to view your statements and pay your bills.

I’m not on MyChart — how do I sign up? 

Go to MyChart and click on “Sign Up (I don’t have a code)”

What care services will be reflected on the new UVA Health System statement?

Your new consolidated statement will include any care received after July 1, 2017 at most UVA Health System locations including: UVA Medical Center and our physician practices and lab sites. Again, please remember that you may continue to receive separate billing statements for care provided prior to July 1.

Who is responsible for paying my bill?

You are responsible for paying your bill(s). We will bill your insurance company directly unless you specify otherwise. If a balance remains after your insurance has issued a payment or a denial, that balance will be noted on your statement and is due immediately upon receipt.

What if I am not able to pay my bill?

There are several programs to help patients with medical expenses. You may also contact us and arrange monthly installments with interest-free financing. Find out about financial help.

My bill says the amount due is zero. Why did I receive the bill?

The Medical Center will send you an informational bill soon after you receive services to let you know what charges we're submitting to your insurance company.

My bill lists "none" for insurance and I have insurance. Why did this happen and what should I do?

During the registration process, your insurance information was not entered. Please call Patient Financial Services at  434.924.5376  or 800.523.4398 as soon as possible and provide the following information about your insurance:

  1. Name of the insurance company
  2. Policy number
  3. Group number
  4. When the policy started
  5. Where the claim should be mailed (the address of the insurance company)
  6. Name of the policy holder
  7. The relationship of the policy holder to the patient

Where do I call if I have questions about my application for financial assistance?


I do not have health insurance, or have limited coverage, and cannot afford to pay my hospital bill. Do you have a program to help me?

How can I get a cost estimate of hospital and physician services?

We can provide hospital and doctor services cost estimates (excluding grant and research estimates). Email us or call 434.243.7283

How can I get my billing related information released to specific parties?

Use this HIPAA-compliant form for patients (PDF). Signing it gives us permission to release billing-related information to specific parties. Once this form has been signed and completed, UVA Health System can release the specified information to the person, business or law firm as directed by the patient.

I received a bill from the Medical Center. What is the bill for?

Inpatient (you were in the hospital overnight) and outpatient charges from UVA Medical Center are for hospital services such as lab work, X-rays, outpatient surgery or your stay in the hospital if you were an inpatient.
