Dialysis at UVA
Our team includes nephrologists, certified kidney dietitians and social workers. Together, we focus on providing you with the best possible care available.
Our program’s highlights include:
- Expertise: We have the largest academic hemodialysis program in the country, giving us a unique depth of expertise that few centers can match.
- Convenient care: With locations throughout Central Virginia equipped with dialysis units, we make it easy for you to get the care you need. We also offer home dialysis options such as nocturnal dialysis that allows you to receive dialysis while you sleep.
- Innovative research: Our active participation in research and clinical trials gives you access to new devices and peritoneal dialysis solutions that are not widely available.
- Top-notch safety standards: For more than 10 years, UVA has been awarded with the mid-Atlantic region’s top patient safety honors.
Dialysis Treatment Options
We offer a broad range of dialysis treatments. We'll help you find the option that fits your preferences and lifestyle.
Hemodialysis uses a special machine to filter your blood and transfer it to and from your body. In-center hemodialysis takes place in one of our dialysis units while you sit in a comfortable chair.
Patients on home dialysis receive the same expert care we provide for in-center dialysis. However, treatments take place in the comfort of your home. To make sure your dialysis is on track, our team stays in touch with you by phone, and you come in for testing and follow up care once a month.
Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdominal cavity (peritoneum) to filter out toxins and extra fluid from your blood. You receive peritoneal dialysis treatments through a catheter we insert into your peritoneum.
