Living with Advanced Kidney Disease
Having advanced kidney disease can change your life. You may feel too sick to participate in everyday activities, and treatment may be exhausting. It's normal to experience a range of emotions when you have CKD or have to go on dialysis. Our social workers are a resource to coordinate services with our Behavioral Medicine Center if needed.
You may be surprised to learn that feeling good about yourself and spending time doing your favorite activities is actually good for your health and well being.
At UVA, we offer a range of services that optimize your kidney function. Many of our patients are able to get back to the activities and lifestyle they previously enjoyed, including living independently, traveling and working.
Services available to patients living with kidney disease include:
- Nutrition: Our entire team of 50 dietitans has additional training in meeting the unique needs of dialysis patients. We help you find kidney-friendly foods you enjoy eating.
- Daily living: Our masters-level social workers give you practical tips, support and encouragement to help you get back to a normal routine.
- Education: Learning about kidney disease can help you know what to expect and feel comfortable taking an active role in your care.
