Giving Birth at UVA

What's it like to have a baby at UVA?

The Facilities

The rooms are:

  • Private suites
  • Spacious, with room for a spouse or other care partner to stay overnight

Your Birth Plan, Your Choice, Your Safety

We support you, no matter what kind of birth you plan to have or end up having. We offer you the chance to have as natural a birth as you desire, with little to no medical interventions or medications.

Should an unplanned issue arise, our experienced neonatal specialists are standing by in the nationally ranked Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the only one in the area.

We've also earned the Baby-Friendly designation by meeting these international standards.

The Support

Our staff includes highly trained labor and delivery nurses. We also offer additional support.

Certified Nurse Midwives

Nurse practitioners who specialize in women’s health and in birth and newborn care, midwives help women make healthy choices and maintain well-being throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Watch midwife Kate Becker talk about the midwifery program at UVA.

Lactation Consultants

Enjoy the expertise of internationally board-certified lactation consultants. They are on hand to help you and your child right from the start. And they also follow your progress after you go home, as part of our award-winning Breastfeeding Medicine Program.

Doulas and Care Partners

We welcome doulas to advocate for and support you during your delivery. We also encourage you to have a support person, or care partner, with you, to take care of you while you care for your new baby.

Should you need them, we have social workers, chaplains and other support services available.

Resources for Your Baby

We follow best practices in sleep safety, providing free sleep sacks for your newborn.

Find a pediatrician: UVA Children's Hospital has doctors with access to advanced specialties while providing child-centered services close to you.
