Athletes need to strike a balance between pushing their bodies to perform and preventing injuries that could result in significant down time away from training.
Individual Sports Clinics
A Runner’s Clinic for All Levels
Though running is a popular sport for many, it’s also the cause of many injuries. According to the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, nearly 70 percent of all runners will experience an injury caused by running, including runner’s knee, stress fractures, shin splints and Achilles tendinitis.
We focus on the unique injuries and treatment needs of runners at all skill levels. We offer:
- Extensive evaluation of your injury
- Biomechanical analysis to identify muscle and joint imbalances that may cause injury, including treadmill analysis
- Customized rehabilitation exercise program
- Training advice to assist in a safe return to running
- Aquatic therapy (deep water running) during the healing period to maintain and improve running fitness

SPEED Clinic for Runners, Cyclists and Golfers
The SPEED Clinic (Strength, Power, Endurance, Education and Development) at UVA specializes in running, clinical bike fits and golf swing analyses. We’re a national performance testing and research center for the analysis of gait (walking and running) and movement.
The clinic uses some of the world’s most sophisticated equipment for gathering kinematic (range of motion) and kinetic (force) data. Twelve highly sensitive infrared cameras capture joint mobility at 500 frames per second, while a special treadmill examines the force that an athlete experiences in real-world conditions 1,000 times per second. These tools help us identify performance limitations and injury risk for runner, cyclists and golfers.
