Neurorecovery Center

Recovering from a Neurological Injury

Our rehabilitation care for patients with brain injuries and disorders includes full assessments and rehabilitation planning. We treat patients with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, stroke, neuromuscular diseases (such as multiple sclerosis) and muscle tone disorders (such as dystonia).

Brain injury rehabilitation involves our experts helping you to:

  • Restore functions
  • Learn how to do things differently when functions can’t be restored
  • Relearn cognitive (thinking, reasoning and remembering) skills, behavioral skills and physical skills

We also assess your need for assistive and adaptive equipment, and we train caregivers so families are prepared to take care of patients at home. Our hospital rehabilitation unit includes a suite where family members can spend the night and practice providing care to loved ones under the supervision of our staff.

Neurocognitive Assessment

The neuropsychologists at the UVA Neurosciences Center provide diagnosis and treatment management for people with neurologic disorders and brain injuries, strokes and multiple sclerosis. Therapy is available to help patients adjust to their disability and to deal with behavioral and emotional problems that may come with a neurologic disorder. The exam includes behavioral tests that evaluate overall brain function.

Our rehab specialists use the latest technology to assist patients in neurorecovery therapy, including:

  • A robotic-assisted therapy device that uses repetitive activities to restore movement in the upper extremities
  • Electrical stimulation devices that restore movement to the upper and lower extremities
  • Sophisticated treadmill equipment with robotic legs that “walk” for patients who are unable to walk, assisting with their gait recovery
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy for treating swallowing disorders
  • An orthotics device that helps patients who are unable to flex and extend their hands to restore grasp and release function
