Islet Cell Transplant

Islet Cell Transplant

Islets help the patient’s body begin to regulate blood glucose in a more normal way and prevent hypoglycemia.

Over the past 10 years, more than 200 human islet isolations have been performed by the UVA islet isolation team. The program has performed 27 pancreatic islet auto transplants and 6 human islet allotransplants under two investigational new drugs. More than 50 million human islets have been provided to diabetes researchers around the world, accelerating the pace of discovery in diabetes research.

Transplants For Pancreatitis

We're doing auto islet cell transplantation for patients with chronic pancreatitis, a service not available at many hospitals. During auto islet cell transplant, the patient's pancreas is removed and islet cells are removed from the pancreas and put into the patient's liver. The islet cells then produce insulin, which may prevent the patient from needing insulin injections.
