My name is Avery Evans, and I have appointments in radiology, neurology and neurological surgery. What I do is a kind of endovascular neurosurgery, so I treat different aspects of diseases of the blood vessels of the brain, and of the spine. UVA for many years has been at the forefront of this, we had one of the first Gamma Knife units in the United States, which is a specialized unit that I coordinate with other doctors to treat patients with. We've been treating brain aneurysms with endovascular tools. We're one of the original institutions in the country that was treating brain aneurysms with what are called coils. So, we have a long history of that, and we have patients referred to us from all over the country, and really all over the world for those particular techniques. When new patients come to see me it's usually because they have a significant problem with the blood vessels of the brain. And the first thing I'll do is I'll explain to them what it is they have, what the options are for treatment, I'll explain the risks and the benefits of the surgery that's involved, and then we'll have a long discussion about whether or not they think this is something that's right for them. What I'm passionate about is being there for the patient, and so they know, and the families know when they're about to have a surgery that I care deeply about what's going to happen, and about getting a good result for them. Every step of the way from the beginning, through the surgery, and through the recovery. And that's what really makes me happy these days, is taking care of patients.
