IÕm Dr. Bruce Schirmer, and I am the Steven H. Watts Professor of Surgery at the University of Virginia. Most of my operations are confined to the abdominal cavity. So IÕll do anything from the esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon, and abdominal wall hernias. Those are the main things I do. The other area that I focus on, which is a significant part of my practice, is metabolic and bariatric surgery. ItÕs a total metamorphosis for the patient. They really change in many, many ways. Not only physically, losing huge amounts of weight, improving their medical problems, but they really become new people. They can do things they never did before, socially, physically. ItÕs like having, literally, a brand new life. I love my job. Some days I canÕt believe they pay me to do it. I just love coming to work. I love taking care of patients, doing procedures that make them better. At University of Virginia, we can treat a whole spectrum of things, from the most simple problems, to the most complex. WeÕve got an environment where itÕs very easy for me to get consultation from an expert if I have any issues with one of my patients. And they really are experts. So itÕs an outstanding center, huge amount of resources in terms of people knowledge, people that are really very knowledgeable in their fields. Not only that, but itÕs objectively rated as the best hospital in the state.
