I'm David Hamilton. I'm a psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry in Neuro-behavior Sciences at the University of Virginia. My practice is divided. The first part of the week I see patients in the hospital in the consult-liaison service. Second part of the week is focused more on research and running the Treatment Resistant New Disorders clinic at the University of Virginia. I find understanding the connection between the mind and the way that we experience the world and the brain to be endlessly fascinating. It is constantly a source of wonder that we're able to have all of the experiences of consciousness just because some cells are firing. To be able to understanding that, to relieve people's suffering is really a privilege. I find the work very fulfilling. I think, in general, the University of Virginia serves as a bastion for people that have really tried a lot of different approaches to alleviating their suffering, whether it be psychiatric or other kinds of medical problems. UVA is a place where they can come and have people that are really trying to expand therapeutic options, are really trying to help people that have tried things that are out there and need novel approaches. We're able to provide that service for them.
