AARAT PATEL: My name's Aarat Patel. I'm in adult and pediatric rheumatologist. UVA is one of the only tertiary centers that has a pediatric rheumatologist in Virginia. There's just not enough rheumatologists in this country or really in the world. I did this specialty, because I can see adults and children with autoimmune disease. And I think some patients and some family members really appreciate what we do as rheumatologists, because of the scarcity of rheumatologists and the rarity of these diseases, which are not very well understood by even other physicians. So I'll have patients from all different walks of life coming to see me here in Charlottesville. If you have a child who has an autoimmune condition, it can be hard for you to find a pediatric rheumatologist. A lot of adult patients as well as the pediatric patients don't look at me as an authoritative figure. I'm not usually telling people what to do as far as medications. It's sort of a joint venture. I mean, I think I'm just a regular guy who's doing his job. [MUSIC PLAYING]
