ALAN MATSUMOTO: I'm Alan Matsumoto. I'm an interventional radiologist at the University of Virginia. Interventional radiologist is a physician. We have oftentimes more than 10 years of post graduate education, and we specialize in using medical imaging to guide us to perform minimally invasive treatment options. I chose the specialty of interventional radiology after I actually finished a career as an internal medicine physician and after spending time working in an emergency room. The ability to see inside someone's body, not only to make a diagnosis, but to figure out a way to treat them was very intriguing. And the ability to provide treatment options that may not be able to be done with surgical techniques, also was very intriguing. So the specialty not only employs imaging technology, device technology, but a full understanding of your anatomy, physiology, pathology. Plus it allows for a little creativity. So it's a wonderful specialty. The most rewarding part of my job is to be able to partner with patients and having the tools and the facilities and the expertise of colleagues to allow us to provide those treatment options for patients.
