[MUSIC PLAYING] AMIT SHAHANE: My name is Amit Shahane, and I'm a clinical psychologist at the University of Virginia Health System within the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. My specialty is clinical health psychology, where I am currently the director of the Behavioral Medicine Center and the director of our psychology postdoctoral fellowship program. Big difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that psychiatrists prescribe medicines for mental health conditions. Psychologists, we primarily utilize different types of therapies like cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapies to help address those mental health conditions. Any patient that has a medical issue and a psychological condition, we treat depression, anxiety, stress, bipolar disorder. We treat trauma such as posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as any other behavioral disruption, such as behavioral issues that get in the way of a medical treatment. As a patient, you would come to see us in our behavioral medicine clinic is because one, you're going to get first-rate service. You're also going to interact with a group of people that actually care about you as a person.
