Hello. My name is Brent DeGeorge. IÕm a plastic surgeon and a hand and upper extremity specialist at the University of Virginia. I enjoy taking care of patients with complex wrist issues, and that includes fractures of the carpus, and the radius, and ulna. I had a family member who was badly injured in a motorcycle accident, and I saw a lot of the care that went into making him whole again. And that affected me deeply and caused me to pursue a career in plastic surgery, as the plastic surgeons essentially helped him through a lot of his hardships. This is a great collaborative environment, particularly for the hand and upper extremity. We work extremely well with our colleagues in orthopedic surgery, and we can provide multidisciplinary care to fully address all of your needs as a patient. You know, itÕs incredible. You see some people with such significant challenges, and when you can put your hands on the patient and figure out exactly whatÕs causing that problem, and then come up with a reliable, simple solution, and see them back in clinic and theyÕre doing the things that they want to do, and theyÕre back to the activities that they really love, I mean, itÕs a special feeling. ItÕs one of the things thatÕs unique about hand surgery. We interact with the world through our hands, and when you canÕt have that interaction, it really dramatically affects people. So seeing people on that journey from problem stage to solution stage is really, itÕs quite rewarding.
