[MUSIC PLAYING] EUGENE MCGAHREN: I'm Gene McGahren. I'm the chief of pediatric surgery at the University of Virginia Children's Hospital. I was very interested in taking care of children, but I was also interested in surgery. And when I did pediatric surgery as a rotation in medical school, I just fell in love with it right away. Some call us the last of the great general surgeons, and we cover not only a wide variety of children in terms of age, but also in terms of the conditions that they present to us. And we also cover a wide variety of the anatomy. Parents should know that I am trying to make the very best decisions that I can make for their children, but that I will also discuss as much as possible with them so that we're all understanding what the plan is, what the condition is that we're trying to treat, and also what the expectations will be moving forward after the care. One of the things that makes UVA very unique is that we are a Children's Hospital within a hospital. We have all the resources and technical capabilities of a major health system that not every freestanding Children's Hospital has. I think the best part of my day is making a really good decision to help a child whether that's a surgical decision or a non-surgical decision and then attaining a great outcome for them.
