My name is Gorav Ailawadi. I'm Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery, the director of minimally invasive cardiac surgery and also the surgical director of the Advanced Valve Center. I do all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, but I focus mostly on valve disease. Valve disease can consist of many different valves. The aortic valve and mitral valve are the two most common valves. Within valve disease, I do a fair amount of minimally invasive operations. What's important for patients to know that at UVA they're going to get many different experts thinking about their disease. It's going to be personalized and in the end, I think an excellent result because we do have a lot of experience with very complicated patients. We do offer pretty much the breadth of cardiac surgery that's offered anywhere in the country from least invasive clinical trials, the newest technologies, to very complicated open surgery. The most rewarding thing I find is the immediate gratification or assessment if we fixed a problem. Obviously in the end, it's all about the patient so it's nice to see that the patient certainly is living a better life, that they're feeling better, they can breathe, they can do the things that they want to do. In fact, I usually when I discharge a patient from my clinic, really encourage them to go live life as much as they want because that's the whole reason why we did the operation on them.
