- I'm Hillary Maitland, and I'm a hematologist at the UVA Cancer Center. I see mostly patients with bleeding and blood disorders. I treat patients with blood clots and inherited bleeding tendencies. I've always been interested in blood and bleeding disorders. The way the blood works in coagulation and the science behind blood clotting was interesting to me. I really like working with patients, and that's the best part of my job. I like meeting different people and seeing people both in inpatient and the outpatient side. Here at UVA, we have pretty much the only benign hematology team in Virginia. We see people for blood clots, bleeding disorders, anemia, and low blood counts. And these things don't necessarily have to be related to a cancer. We see patients for a variety of different things, some things that they were born with, some things that they acquire over time. We have doctors that specialize in bleeding and blood clots as well as pharmacists who specialize in medications for management of bleeding and blood clots. And it's great to see patients that this makes such a big difference in their life that they can go out and be healthier people overall.
